Asparagus
Asparagus officinalis
Description
Asparagus is a classic perennial vegetable, and perhaps the most familiar one that we offer. They grow tasty shoots in the spring and early summer that can be grilled, sautés, steamed, or cooked in so many different and delicious ways. They are fairly easy to care for: simply plant the crowns in a well prepped bed, keep the weed pressure down with mulch and an occasional weeding, let them get established for a year or two, and then harvest asparagus for the next 10 to 15 years!
All our plants are sold as crowns grown from seed from our healthy mother patch here at Nuts & Bolts. With a little time, you can grow asparagus from seed too!
Site Preference
Asparagus likes rich soil and full sun, but as it’s an early bloomer it does well under the shade of trees that leaf out later in the season.
