(Asimina triloba)

This shade-tolerant tree is often called the ‘tropical’ fruit of the northeast. With a sweet custard-like flavor and unique creamy texture, the Pawpaw is more reminiscent of mangos and bananas than apples or peaches. Yet it is native to the northeast. The trees can fruit even within the shade, which makes it great as an understory tree. Paw Paws are not self-fertile and require multiple trees to produce fruit.

Our seeds are foraged from local northeast (New England trees) and potentially more adapted to our local climate.

Site Preference

Can tolerate shade to full sun. Plant at least two for pollination. Pawpaws are flexible on the type of soil. In general, good drainage is critical, soil pH is moderately acid to neutral, in the range of 5.5 to 7.0. They will be happiest in a home of rich, deep, loamy soil with high organic matter content.

Hardiness

Hardy to zone 5b, so it can make it up in Maine or Vermont!
