Peach
Prunus persicia
Description
Peaches are lovely trees with lanceolate leaves and cute little five-petaled pink flowers in the spring that give rise to their iconic, delicious fruit in the summer. Peach trees generally top out around 20’ tall if left to their own devices, but thoughtful pruning can keep them much smaller and more manageable, as well as promoting airflow and helping to mitigate disease. Peaches can even be trained in an espalier shape for growth along fences and walls.
Peaches are best eaten straight off the tree, but are also lovely baked in pies or cobbles and can be preserved through canning or candying.
Currently, all our trees are first-year seedlings grown from healthy, productive parents that grow an abundance of delicious, free-stone peaches. Approximately two feet tall. Despite commercial orchards using only clones, Peaches are actually very true to seed, so seedling peaches generally come out pretty similar to their parents. With our seedling Peaches, you can expect to have your own brand new and completely unique variety of delicious, locally-adapted Peaches! Or, you can graft it over to some clone and have a known variety of non-unique Peach. The choice is yours!
Site Preference
Peaches like full sun nitrogen-rich soil, so try companion planting them with a nitrogen fixer. They also like lots of water, so be sure to mulch around them well to keep that moisture locked in the soil. Also try inoculating the mulch with winecap mushrooms to help support the tree and manage disease pressure.
